Like most people my aim is to get the best possible image quality.
This is the view of my back yard taken with a Hikvision 8mp camera that has a 2.8mm fixed lens.
As you can see from the images, I can't quite read those car registration plates.
In this situation, do you think that one of the new Hikvision 16mp with a 2.8mm lens would enable me to read those registration plates or not ?
It's not that I specifically need to read car reg plates but would like more detail in that area because we get suspicious individuals over there from time to time, usually during the day.
At night the light from my current camera (both IR and colour as it's a ColorVu) is pretty useIess at that distance so I can't see much over there anyway.
On another thread someone recommended Varifocal but then I'd lose my wide-angle view unless I installed a second camera.

If you need to cover that area a second vari-focal lens camera set to 12mm and directed to that area will likely be your best bet. If cabling is an issue you can get a 'Haydon IP/PoE Combiner/Splitter' and just use your existing cable for both the existing and new camera.

I know those 16MP cameras are showing on websites but who knows when they'll be available.

I saw that maximum you can get on 16MP is 12.5 fps

Downside is:

Sensor size 1/1.8
Worse night image if using color mode
Worse framerate

Benefits:

Better digital zoom details
