Motion Detection issues at night - HIKVISION 8MP Hybrid cameras

Hello there. So im currently experiencing a very strange issue that I cannot seem to resolve.

I installed a HIKVISION HUHI DVR (latest version) paired with HIKVISION 8MP Hybrid cameras for a customer of mine. The camera model number is

DS-2CE78U0T-LF-2.8MM

The issue is that the motion detection works flawlessly through the day. It picks up motion detection straight away and sends a notification. However at night the cameras simply DO NOT detect anything. If I remove the "human" filter the customer gets an influx of false alarms.

All the settings have been triple checked, everything is set correctly. As I said, as doon as the sun comes up the notifications fine again.

So my question is, is it possible that the cameras simply cannot see at night. The customers home is a new build property with no streetlamps surrounded by fields. The only thing allowing you to get any image is the built in light from the camera. Will installing additional lighting around the cuatomers property resolve this issue?

did you solve the problem?

The minimum illumination specs for those cameras should tell you the problem:

  • Camera
  • Image Sensor4K CMOS
  • Max. Resolution3840 (H) × 2160 (V)
  • Min. Illumination0.01 Lux @ (F1.6, AGC ON), 0 Lux with IR
(compare the above specs to Colorvu or proper Darkfighter cameras)

The customers home is a new build property with no streetlamps surrounded by fields.

Put bluntly that's woeful low light performance in that camera model. Even Colorvu's (with far better low light performance) don't do well with zero street lighting.

My thoughts- better cameras are required and more lighting around the house (be it IR or white light.)

That model is actually a ColorVu but you've illustrated perfectly why I only use-IP (see what I did there - groan). Hikvisions HDTVi range don't have the larger image sensors, better build quality and available parameter adjustment that the IP range have.

Thanks. I didn't pick up it wasn't an IP camera model- I just went straight to the light sensitivity specs. I'd be hoping those HDTVi models are substantially cheaper?

Hikvision seriously need to stop using the "Colorvu" and "powered by Darkfighter" labels on cameras that don't perform well in low light. It happens on the IP models too.

BTW I can't see Colorvu mentioned anywhere on the data sheet or website? https://assets.hikvision.com/prd/normal/all/doc/m000112373/DS-2CE78U0T-LF_Datasheet_20250807.pdf
